Footprints in the Sand (But Smaller)

Vacation is a time to let go and let the sun and sand be your guide. But even during your glorious Sea Shells Beach Club vacation, you can keep your carbon footprint smaller with a little commitment.

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, we’ve put together these reminders for how you can make every day Earth Day, even while you’re having fun.

Plastic Bottles
You know it, I know it: They’re terrible for the environment (but they’re just so darn convenient sometimes). Bring your own water bottle with you and fill it at water fountains and everywhere else you can. If you don’t like the taste of the tap, ice helps. I also put a carabiner clip on my water bottle so I can hook it to my bag/s.

If You Fly…
Did you know you can actually choose a more fuel efficient aircraft? Travel plans don’t always allow for such a choice, but if you have the ability, choose a Boeing 777, 787 or Airbus 345. The Boeing 787 aircraft is the best option since its fuel consumption will be 20%-30% percent less than other similarly sized aircrafts.

Use Your Condo for Good (Cooking)
Eat local. Find a farmer’s market or street stall and bring home fresh food you can enjoy in your condo kitchen (try the Daytona Beach Farmer’s Market). The food is more than likely locally grown and sourced, and you get to support the local community.

Be a Beach Buddy
When you go to the beach for the day with your food and drinks and wipes, bring a large trash bag. Not only can you easily keep your trash contained, you can pick up any other trash you see in the area and help clean up the beach.

Wildlife: Look But Don’t Touch
When you encounter animals in the wild, blend into their world. Don’t feed them, don’t taunt them, and most importantly don’t try to take them home with you. In Florida, you must be extremely careful if you encounter sea turtles, their eggs or their young. They are protected, and touching them is illegal. If you see a turtle in danger, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-888-404-FWCC or *FWC from your cell phone.

Remember, your Sea Shells Beach Club vacation is only possible because Mother Earth has provided beautiful places like the beaches of Daytona. Take care of her while you enjoy your trip.
