DeLand: Old Florida with a New Vibe [Video]

Just a half-hour from Sea Shells Beach Club, DeLand Florida is a fun and interesting excursion. From its deep history to its great shopping and dining, DeLand is worth a visit.

The county seat of Volusia County, DeLand is nicknamed the “Athens” of Florida for its beauty, culture and education. It is also home to Stetson University, Florida’s oldest college.

Here are a few more things that make DeLand a worthy destination.

DeLand was the very first community to receive the MainStreet designation in 1985. The city has received the “Great American MainStreet Award,” and has been voted the “Best MainStreet in Florida” five times. The shopping is amazing, with a wide variety of merchants. Browse the shops and art galleries, dine at fine restaurants, or stop for coffee at one of the specialty coffee shops.

Museum of Art – DeLand
From sculpture to painting and so much more, the Museum of Art is a great way to enjoy some culture. Study current exhibits, walk the sculpture garden or visit the Children’s Art Center.

De Leon Springs State Park
De Leon Springs State Park could be a day trip on its own! Swim in the spectacular springs, birdwatch, picnic and grill, cook your own pancakes or enjoy a meal at the Sugar Mill Restaurant (a replica of the original 1830s sugar mill), or take a Fountain of Youth boat tour. It’s 625 acres of fun.

Skydiving Capitol of the World
DeLand has been called the “skydiving capital of the world”, with the majority of skydiving industries calling it home. In fact, both AFF and Tandem Skydiving was invented in DeLand. Skydive DeLand is one of the largest skydiving facilities in the world, with something for everyone, from the zero-experienced to seasoned professional skydivers.

There’s so much to do and see in DeLand, you might want to plan a whole day around it.

Have you visited DeLand? What do you think are the ‘must see and do’ attractions?
