4 Daytona Museums Worth Visiting

Rainy days don’t have to be a total wash! When staying at Sea Shells Beach Club in Daytona, chances are good you’ll be enjoying sun, sand and surf. But if you’re traveling off-season or just get a day or two of uncooperative weather, museums can be a great way to spend the day.

Marine Science Center
Take an environmental journey as you expand your knowledge of the area’s diverse wildlife. Witness rehabilitation efforts for live sea turtles and seabirds, explore fascinating mangrove and whale exhibits or pet a stingray at the Center’s huge artificial reef aquarium.  Commemorate the experience with a souvenir from the MSC Gift Shop.

Lilian Place
While not a museum per se, Lilian Place is a beautiful and somewhat eerie spot to take in stunning Victorian architecture and learn a little about what life was like for maritime folk in the late 19th Century.  The house has a “widow’s walk” which allowed the wives of whalers to watch for their husbands returning from sea. Lilian Place is rumored to be haunted by the mischievous ghost known as “Lucille” who has restlessly paced the halls for more than 100 years. Lilian Place is open for tours Wednesday through Monday, afternoons only.

Halifax Historical Museum
The building is a destination itself at the Halifax Historical Museum, housed in a former Merchants Bank dating back to 1910.The museum’s permanent exhibits represent the history of the greater Daytona Beach area known as Halifax Country with artifacts dating from 5,000 B.C.E., including items from: the local Native Americans, the Timucuans; Spanish and British colonial eras; early pioneer families; beach/road  auto racing; World War I & II; vintage toys & clothing for children and more.

Gillespie Museum
Housed at Stetson University, visitors to the Gillespie Museum can discover the fascinating world of earth science through seasonal exhibits and educational displays. Unearth the science behind more than 15,000 rocks, minerals, corals, meteorites, gemstones and fossils.

Whether you’re a history buff or just want to soak up some interesting indoor fun, museums can be the perfect supplement to your Sea Shells Beach Club vacation.
